Robert Fico was the target of an assassination attempt on May 15, 2024, in Handlová. The attacker was 71-year-old writer Juraj Cintula, who disagreed with the government’s policies. Fico was shot multiple times, suffering severe injuries to his stomach, shoulder, and hip joint. After the attack, he was immediately transported by helicopter to a hospital in Banská Bystrica, where he underwent a five-hour surgery.
According to available information, the assassination attempt was politically motivated, making it the first such attack on a European Prime Minister since 2003. After surgery, Fico was in stable condition, but his health remained serious.
